CrossFit TEENs: training for young people 11+
Young people train in a group of their own. They learn clean movement first and add weight only after that. Coach Nicole Krawczyk is responsible for the project.
// How we train
What to know before the first class
A group of their own
Teenagers train with their peers, not with adults and not with small kids. They have different goals, and they do better among people their own age.
Technique before weight
The movement has to be clean. We start with no load or with a PVC pipe, and weight comes later, in the smallest possible steps. The coach watches every lift.
Matched to the person, not to age
We scale every workout to the teenager's level and maturity. That way everyone can finish it and the competition is fair.
Strength training is safe
The 2014 international consensus statement on youth resistance training (British Journal of Sports Medicine) says strength training is safe and beneficial for young people when it is well supervised.
// The class
What an hour looks like
Usually around 60 minutes. The order is always similar:
Briefing at the board
We demonstrate the movement, the range of motion and the common mistakes.
A short warm-up
One that gets the body ready to move.
Skill practice
We repeat the movement until it is clean.
A short workout
Often with a game or a surprise in it.
A second skill block
Short again.
Stretching and mobility
That is how we finish.
// Safety
How we look after it
Dropping the barbell
We teach how to let it go safely before anyone lifts anything serious.
We watch the volume
Teenagers push hard, and during a growth spurt bones and growth plates are more sensitive to overload, so we control how much gets done.
Water, shoes, no jewellery
Bring water and sports shoes. Leave jewellery at home.
We ask about health
What should we know about your child’s health? Medication, asthma, injuries. When something changes, tell the coach.
